What is Acne?
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the United States, typically affecting patients from their early teenage years through adulthood. Characterized by pimples and blemishes on the skin's surface, acne can often be detrimental to our patients' emotional health and self-esteem. Acne is most commonly found on the face, but can also affect the skin on the back, neck, shoulders, and chest. While many patients are aware of what acne may look like, there are several types of acne bumps that we generally see at our practice:
- Comedones. Commonly called blackheads or whiteheads, these occur when the tiny holes in the skin (pores) become clogged.
- Papules. These blemishes are typically caused by inflamed or infected follicles that result in red, raised bumps.
- Pustules. These small red pimples have pus at their tips.
- Nodules. These solid and painful lumps occur beneath the surface of your skin.
- Cysts. These large lumps also found beneath the skin are typically filled with pus, causing the patient much more pain and discomfort than nodules.
If you believe you have acne and are interested in learning more about treatment, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with with one of our expert dermatology providers at your earliest convenience.
What Causes Acne?
Acne develops when the pores become filled and clogged with dirt, dead skin cells, oils, and/or bacteria. Many of our patients struggling with acne have excess oil production in the skin leading to an overgrowth of certain bacteria. Often, genetics, hormones, and inflammation play a role.
